If you are an Aspiring UI Designer then always focus on the Visualization Part.
Because in reality many of the so-called UI designers just put it on their resume for the sake of it. But as an Aspiring UI Designer, Visualizing a concept should be your topmost priority.
Sadly in many of the cases, it doesn’t happen. I myself have seen this while being present physically in the interview process for my company.
What I have seen, is not just silly but pathetic. Once I asked an experienced (more than 5 years) Web & Graphic designer, “do you know anything about Visual Communication?”.
Pretty Basic Right for a Seasoned Designer? But Alas! You know what reply I got?
He told me that, Ye….ess (in a bit hesitation) I know because I have to work in Photoshop to create Website Layouts when the Graphic Designer is not present.
It was one reply, one another response was from a different guy, ya I know HTML, CSS & also how to create beautiful responsive pages! Period.
Then I simply asked him what is about Visual Communication? As you have mentioned in your CV that you have worked a UI Designer so you must be familiar with this term.
He was totally surprised & told me if I give him any new website design he will be able to create the layout in photoshop by taking inspiration from other popular designs & trends. But no idea about what Visual Communication literally is.
Even another interviewee was more shocked & out of that he told me “Actually I design website UI using HTML, CSS that’s why I have mentioned the UI designer term”.
Oh Great. When a so-called UI Designer tells he has no idea about Visual Communication then how could he be able to communicate a complex business idea with an enticing creative.
Because I strictly believe, every Aspiring UI Designer should start from the very basic first & Visual Communication is the core to that.
When you are designing a User Interface for a specific Business’s Website/ Application, you must know how to create Visual Interface which will make the experience of a user smoother by transforming complex business messages in a very easy to understand manner.
Now you may argue why a UI Designer should bother about the experience? Isn’t it a different thing?
Hmmmm. Tell me are you working in a Fortune 500 company, if yes then ok. Because there you will just have to do your part of work. If that’s not the scenario then you have to keep a Holistic Approach on designing.
Always remember, you are a designer, a Visual UI Designer. So being a designer if you don’t have any solid grasp over Communication through Visual Medium then who else would have.
Don’t try to put the load on someone else’s shoulder. While you are a designer or aspiring to be then try to be a Master of your craft from ground zero level. It will not harm but strengthen you.
You can’t be a Master of any Language without knowing the core constructs of it, right? So here also it’s Equally true.
Being a UI Designer with having no Idea & Knowledge of Visual Communication is just like this. If a designer can’t communicate through his/ her Creative work then who else will.
