Thinking about blocking social networks at your office? Then wait, at first just have a look at all the consequences!
You must be thinking what the hell am I talking about, how not blocking social networks at work place can be good or productive by any means? Right?
I know, it’s not only you, more than 70% people (if not more) will argue against this but still I think that blocking social networks at offices/ workplaces is not a good idea at all.
I also know that you have your argument ready like, it decreases productivity, it hampers quality output etc. But don’t you think every coin has two sides?
Then how can we blame the most powerful/ necessary medium (Social Media) of this generation like this; We can’t & we shouldn’t. Social Media has lots of great benefits which we can’t ignore.
But today my objective is quite specific with a bit difference. I am going to cover how blocking social networks at workplaces is not always or at all good from many aspects?
I will specifically raise 5 such aspects, considering which you should think twice before introducing any such policies in your organization!
You must be curious to know, what are those aspects that I am going to tell. Ok, so here they are,
#1. In between long working hours we need a bit refreshment
Ya, that’s true because generally in corporate/ IT sectors the working hour is normally long. So due to that after a certain time, fatigue comes and it’s obvious.
Due to this the normal efficiency of a person decreases to a great extent. So there need a bit of refreshment in regular interval to work actively for long hours.
Social Media plays a vital role in it, means for refreshment. Maybe you can have a tea break or you can go to washroom/ outside but for how many times?
So in this regard, if the employees have the privilege to access Social Media then after spending few moments over there they can concentrate on their work energetically.
Sometimes a bit shift from a certain type of work can be a great relief for the mind, so Social Media can give that relief.
After all we are human beings, not any kind of robot who will work uninterruptedly for long hours without any demand.
So think about this.
#2. It increases productivity in a different way
Using Social networks at workplace not only decreases productivity as most of us think. It can also increase productivity but you have to think from a different angle.
Let me explain, just do one thing run an experiment on two different people in two different circumstances. How?
Just assign a task to two different people, give one complete access to all social networks, mail etc. & for the other one restrict all the access of time killing (from different people’s perspective) stuff. Then check!
I bet, the person who has the authority to work freely will be more efficient/ productive and complete the work faster with better quality. But How?
Yes that’s an important question because you must be thinking the guy who is working with full concentration should complete the work faster, right?
But think deeply, I am telling you why. Both have the same target and if anyone fails he/ she will be penalised. So the mindset is quite same for both. But the main differentiating factor is, who works smarter.
The person who is working freely will feel a bit relaxed that, yes I have my target, specified time & all other options too for a bit relaxation in between the job.
So he/ she will plan the schedule in such a way that with work there should be specific intervals for a bit relaxation too. It rejuvenates the mind.
But the person who has no other option, after a certain time the fatigue will come and a monotonous feeling will engulf him. That’s the position from where the productivity will go down.
So let your employees work freely.
#3. There will be an open & free culture
Yes. Let everyone work freely, start an open culture. Don’t impose anything on anybody, if the natural interest grows among people then automatically the quality of job will improve.
If you restrict everyone by blocking social networks and all then I don’t think it will beneficial from anyway.
Because all are matured & all have a sense of responsibility, so assign the task, manage properly, track & analyse that’s all. Ultimately output matters.
Stopping everything will not improve the output because It will give them a feeling of mistrust so they will feel bound. So let them be free & work freely.
#4. Everyone will feel at home & work energetically
If you have an open & free culture, everyone will feel at home & work energetically by taking the job as their own responsibility.
When we work on our own thing, does anybody has to pressurize us, never no? Then? Giving pressure is not a solution, so encourage them, inspire them & create such a workplace where people will love to work.
Blocking social networks or this kind of activity is not at all suggested by me. This signifies that you don’t have any trust for your employees.
Then how the employees will be able to trust you? Because you have created the environment of mistrust. So at first create the culture.
#5. Forcing employees for something can have negative impact
Imposing a certain rule like blocking social networks and forcing for something like that can have a negative impact too.
As I have mentioned in my previous point, when employees will lose the trust they will never work from their heart, it will become a mere job.
Just imposing a rule is not the end, there is always a way to bypass the rule so don’t expect that blocking social networks in your office will increase the productivity to a great extent.
Even it can degrade the performance of the employees.
So think about it.
