How to customize search settings of Google Chrome

February 26, 2015 by Animesh Roy Leave a Comment

It’s very easy to customize search settings of Google Chrome.

By default Google is the default search engine in Chrome web browser. But is it the only search engine that you can use ? Obviously Chrome is a product of Google, so Google is the predefined or default search engine for chrome.

But let’s say you want to change or customize the default search engine of chrome. It’s not at all necessary but suppose out of curiosity or to know more, you just want to change the default search engine option to some thing else like Yahoo or Bing.  So how will you do it ?

It’s very simple, you just need to customize search settings of Google Chrome. Let’s find out how.

Follow the simple steps with pictorial representation below.

At first go the upper right corner of your web browser (Google Chrome). There you will get an icon like this See the icon (see in the picture below)

Check the icon
Find the icon

Take your mouse over it and you will see a tool tip which shows “Customize and control Google Chrome”. Just like the picture shown below.

Mouse hover on the icon
Hover on the icon and check what it’s for

Just click on the icon. A drop down menu will open as shown in the picture.

click on the icon
Click on the icon & find the settings options

There you will get a section called “Settings”. It will take you to the main Settings section of Chrome, from where you can customize all settings. So click on “Settings”.

Now you are in the Settings page of Chrome. Go to the “Search” section.

There you will get a combo box for selecting your preferred search engine and a button called  “Manage Search Engines”.

Now click on the downwards arrow  and you will find three predefined search engines, Google, Yahoo & Bing. The selected one will show above, here I am using Google as the default search engine for Chrome.

check the combo box to choose search engine
Choose your preferred search engine from drop down

You can do some experiment by changing or selecting a different search option from this section.

Now you may ask what’s the button “Manage search engines” for, right ?

Let’s say you want to add one more search engine as the option which will reflect in the left combo box to choose from or you might want to change certain options for already defined search engine.

This can be done from this “Manage search engines..”button. So just click it.

A pop-up window called “Search engines” will open as shown below.

Change default search engine
Make another search engine as default or add one more search engine option

As you have already seen there are two sub sections “Default search settings” & “Other search engines”.

The Default search settings shows all the predefined search engines like Google, Yahoo & Bing. As Google is my default search engine that’s why it’s showing Default beside the name.

You can also set a different search engine as default. How will you do it  ?

Just click on any other search engine listed there as shown in the picture below. There will come an option called Make default. Click on it and you will find that the default search engine has changed.

change the default search engine
You can make a different search engine as default from this section

I think one point you have noticed that when you are clicking on any row listed there, the entire row is turned into editable from where you can change the parameters of listed search engines.

There has also a provision for adding other search engines of your choice apart from the already listed ones.

Just check the section named “Other search engines” below the “Default search settings”. There you can add the required details of your preferred search engine.

section to add other search engine
You can add a new search engine as option from this section

There you will find three sections, in the first field enter the name of the search engine, in second field mention a keyword let’s say it’s domain name and in the third section give the URL as mentioned in the respective area in required format.

So what do you think ? Is it too tough to change the search engine settings in Google Chrome ? I don’t think so. Just give it a try.

I have tried to explain the topic as simply as possible. But if you still have any confusion regarding this, then please let me know.
