When you are starting an eCommerce website, apart from its business, legal & tax related matters, you also have to look after some very basic but vital things related to the website.
Because if you are coming into eCommerce, then your eCommerce website is the base/ platform, based on which your entire business/ venture will be rolling.
So to make your venture successful, at first you have to make the platform or the base solid. After that, comes the business related matters and other details what I have mentioned above.
But, don’t worry I am not going to discuss any such hard-core technical stuffs which is beyond your knowledge or capability.
Here I will discuss some very basic points, which are the mix of both technical & non-technical aspect but in an easier way.
These points will highly help you if you are starting an eCommerce website/ venture for the first time or simply speaking if it’s your very first venture.
So, lets find out.
Select a segment at first
Because believe me or not eCommerce vertical has become very crowded, everyday new ventures are popping up. So in this situation segregating you from the crowd is the main thing.
So if you are starting an eCommerce website, then at first think of your niche and think of a specialized one (a micro niche). It’s tough but not too tough, if you look at your surroundings carefully.
May be there are already some big players, who are doing business on your preferred niche but as I have mentioned that narrowing down your niche to the micro level can solve this problem. Just take a specific thing/ concept, based on that spin around your thoughts regarding how to make it more worthy.
So it’s your first job. After completing it take the next step.
Don’t neglect the naming
Naming means proper naming, and it’s important. Name should be short, easy to remember & catchy. You can go for any random combination of letters. But don’t give any misleading name.
Think about domain name extension
Yes, after deciding the name, next comes the domain name extension selection. Whether you will take .com, .net or any other.
Choice is absolutely yours. But the most preferred is .com for any commercial site but if you have decided to run your eCommerce venture in a specific country/ region then you can take country specific domain name extension like .in, .ca etc.
So, you have to make the choice based on where your business will be operated.
Don’t go for cheap hosting
Yes this is another vital and one of the most important thing. Because most of the people always look for cheap hosting.
In this regard I want to say one thing that, when you are starting your online venture then look for quality and reliability at first because for price, if you have to compromise with these two factors then that’s of no use.
Suppose, for saving money you have bought your hosting from such a provider whose up-time, customer service and other necessary services are completely average or below than that.
If the scenario is like this, then do you think your eCommerce venture will ever sail or scale further. I doubt it.
So never ever go for so-called “Cheap Hosting”. Your idea is not cheap, is it? Your website will shape that idea. So, don’t take a chance.
Payment related matters
When you are starting an eCommerce website/ venture then it’s one important thing, because nobody will purchase from your site if the payment and transaction process is messy or simply speaking if it’s not easy.
So when you are purchasing the hosting, at that time talk to the technical support team of your hosting provider, regarding each and every details regarding payment gateway integration and associated things.
After all the discussion if everything seems fine then only proceed further. Because no one tolerates when it’s about money, so when you are starting an eCommerce website then it’s your responsibility to ensure easy and secure payment for all your customers.
So look after this matter carefully.
Whether your site is secure or not?
Have you ever planned to implement SSL on your website or not? If not then think because SSL not only adds an extra layer of security but it boost the confidence of your customers by signifying that they are in safe place.
So if you are serious about your venture then don’t neglect it. Yes cost will increase but it’s related to your site’s/ brand’s liability/ trustworthiness, so don’t take a chance.
Check whether proper Backup and Recovery functionality are there or not
Don’t play with it. Because if you are running an eCommerce site and haven’t implemented or integrated proper back up mechanism then immediately look for it.
As your site will scale, so the number of products and functionalities. In the meantime if something goes wrong and there is no backup maintained properly with easy way for recovery then it’s over. Simply over.
Check your site’s load time
If your site doesn’t load quickly then half of your customers will move away in the very beginning. So for this, beside maintaining all internal technical factors, you have to look after two main things.
First one is, you have to buy a powerful hosting & the second one is, you have to implement CDN. Because not just speed, when your business will grow, hundreds & thousands (if not more) of people will visit your site, so in that scenario if you are not using any good hosting then your site will crash. So to save you and your business from this disaster always keep these things in mind.
Initially if you don’t have sufficient budget then don’t worry, you can upgrade at any time but don’t forget these things.
There are many other factors, but here I have discussed some very basic and important points. So, if you are starting an eCommerce website try to keep these points in mind.
