Don’t worry I am not asking you anything, What The File is a very beautiful WordPress Plugin which can help you to a great extent.
How ? By helping you to find out which template file or template parts your current page is using which you are viewing in your browser.
Still not getting the point and thinking what is the need of it. Right ? No problem that’s why I am here.
In this post I will elaborate you about what is the functionality of What The File plugin and how exactly, in which circumstances it can be beneficial for you. So you will get a very clear picture about this awesome plugin.
So what actually What The File plugin does ?
If you install this plugin in your site and visit any page in logged-in condition then on the right side of upper toolbar you will get an option called What The File, hovering your mouse on that option will show you the exact template file or parts are being used to develop that page.
Check out the snaps to visualize.
If you click on any of the template file or parts showing there, it will directly take you to the Edit Themes section from where you can directly edit the required file. But editing a template file from this section is not the best practice.
One of its draw back is you can’t undo the changes made from this section pressing ctrl+z. Be cautious and follow the best practice. Find the template file , the open it using any traditional code editor like NotePad++ or anything you like then edit (obviously by keeping a safe backup of the file which you are editing).
When you are not using the plugin then you have to search its theme directory inside wp-content to find out what the template file or parts have been used and also have to keep in mind the template hierarchy, which will definitely take a bit time. If you are the core developer of that theme then it’s not a problem but otherwise it’s a time taking matter.
There comes the What The File plugin as a savior from this situation by exactly showing the template details of any page that you are visiting.
So just install this plugin. If you are new to WordPress and don’t know exactly how to install a WordPress plugin then you can read this post to get a solid idea of installing it.
After installing this plugin, visit (in logged-in condition) any page of your site and follow the step that I have already mentioned. That’s all.
Now I am coming on the discussion of who will actually need it and in which situation it will help you.
Who will be benefited ?
A theme developer, a designer, a learner or a publisher or any casual user who is curios to know the template details.
Wait, don’t be surprised, I will explain how all will be benefited by describing different circumstances, which I have faced in my own experiences.
Suppose you are a WordPress Theme Developer, who builds cool themes as per client’s requirement.
But as you know beside making theme from scratch some time there comes some requirement where clients provide ‘some already bought premium themes and they ask for customization and modification.
So at first you have to study the entire structure and hierarchy of the theme. So after installing the theme when you visit a certain page, the first question you asks to yourself that which template file or template parts are being used to develop that particular page.
Then what’s the quick solution to this ? The answer is this plugin (What The File). By using this plugin lots of time of searching inside theme directory will be saved.
Obviously time is a great matter of concern when you are working for your client.
If you are a designer, then also it can be a great help for you.
Let’s say you have to make some design related immediate changes in any page of a WordPress site. Let’s say you have to put an icon in certain area or have to change the layout of an area or something else, then how will you do this ?
Obviously at first you will try to look for the appropriate template file where the required changes need to made, so in this process What the File can help you to find it faster. So give it a try.
Are you a newbie who is delving deeper to learn more about WordPress, Theme building, customization etc. then, this plugin will help you a lot to study the several themes template structure clearly and quickly.
Because in the beginning of learning phase for WordPress development and design, studying some good themes is a great way to explore more. So you can adopt this procedure.
Or you are a publisher or a casual user who uses WordPress for his own purpose but want to learn something (some internal concepts regarding themes) which will help you to get an overall control on the existing system. Then also What The File can help you.
