1. Not having clarity in your Business goals
From a simple layman’s perspective just tell me, Keyword Research means what?
Researching such high intent Key Phrases which will not only justify your nature of the business but using which people will be able to easily find you from Search Engines. Right?
But, if your business objective isn’t clear to you so definitely you will never be able to judge the right set of keywords.
& if it is the scenario then for using wrong keywords people will neither land onto your portal nor be able to find you in the search.
So that’s my main concern. Because I have seen many such people of committing this mistake repetitively while they have just kick-started their Keyword Research process.
2. Neglecting the Customers need
At first, the lack of clarity in Business Goals then neglecting what customers actually want is the main reason why your Keyword Research isn’t giving any result.
Because having a solid insight into your arsenal about your Target Customers is the crucial factor behind your keyword success.
Otherwise, tell me one thing, you don’t know your Target Audience, their Areas of interest & overall you have no idea about your Buyer Persona, so how will you even gauge about what they are searching.
But for successful Keyword Research, having a clear Buyers Persona at your disposal is a must. Otherwise, you will simply play in the dark.
3. Focusing on “I think”
I think it will be the right one, I think this keyword will be most effective!!!! Stop it guys.
Global searches aren’t happening according to your perception or thought process. There is a long way to research.
But instead of doing that if you start with what you think, you will simply go nowhere.
That’s exactly what happened to us in the initial days of CareerFynder. We used to think, Ok this specific phrase is seeming really catchy & a bit popular too, so definitely we should use this.
But after a few weeks later suddenly a peculiar thing came into our notice, we found our search traffic is constantly drowning.
For initial few days we were completely clueless but then we started dissecting the Keywords & after a thorough study and observation we found that the wrongly chosen keywords were the main culprit.
So just come out of this “I think” syndrome because it’s one of the main Keyword Research Mistake.
4. This one is too Unrealistic
It’s another common tendency. Sometimes when you show a set of Key phrases/ Keywords to someone, you must have listened that “these keywords are too unrealistic“.

So never ever do or listen to such blank comments like “Oh, this keyword is too unrealistic”. Never.
5. Creative first atti
Let my creative juices flow first then give me your keywords. Otherwise, it will break my rhythm of writing.
This is called Creative first attitude, simply chuck it off from your dictionary if you are into SEO game.
Keyword Research always comes first then based on the chosen words, optimization begins. But for your own sake if you alter this process that will simply destroy your Keyword finding.
Because keywords should always be decided on the target users intent not based on what you are writing with your creative instinct.
6. Let’s use the highly searched keywords
Out of hurry sometimes people also think if they choose keywords with high search volumes, that will at least give them some visibility.
But it’s a grave mistake you are making. Just think, as you are using a keyword with very high search volume then already hundreds of competitors are using that.
Competitors who are well known in the market with a long history & deep search penetration. So how will throw them out of the track overnight?
& if you choose such high search volume keywords then that night will never get over.
Because for those keywords if your result comes on 15th or 18th page in SERP, will you ever get a single page view?
NO! So don’t jump onto this in a hurry.
7. Who types such looooong phrases in search?
Always focus on Longtail keywords while researching because it’s always effective than short, direct match keywords.
Rather than using the keyword “SEO Jobs” if you use “Online SEO Jobs from Home in India”, it has the much better chance to rank for your specific requirement.
Using Long Tail Keywords you can not only outrank your competitors but this is the actual way people search on the Internet.
Apart from this, the report shows Long Tail Keywords have better Conversion Rate, it helps you rank better for a single keyword & Content focused on Long Tail Keywords give more value to the Readers.
So don’t ever think that who types loooong keywords. Because in reality people does.
& you have to create your Keyword research strategy based on that reality. Then only it’s possible to get a good rank in Search Engines.
