A good domain name: how can it be defined ?
Is there any metric/ standard based on which you can compare your domain name? Not exactly.
But there are some key points, if you can keep those points in mind when deciding your domain name then it will be better.
What are those key points which will help to think about a good domain name ? I am coming to this a bit later, at first I will discuss of its importance. Why the name for site (domain name) is so important ?
Because when you are going to create a site, you obviously have some great plan for the future. Like may be you want to start your own blog, may be you are a freelancer and want to showcase your portfolio, so you are starting a site or may be you have an ongoing business and now you want to expand your reach to broader audience so being online will give your business a huge boost so that’s why you are starting a site.
So the situation can be anything but the ultimate thing is, the name what your thinking now for the site is going to be your brand or who knows may be the next awesome thing on the planet.
You never know how much height your site will take you, because only sky is the limit. So from the beginning give such a name to your site which is more meaningful to you and your audience.
Because you are not thinking of just a domain name, you are thinking about your brand based on which people will know you as the creator of it. So don’t take it lightly.
Now the ultimate thing, what are the key ingredients of a great/ awesome (not just good) domain name.
Ingredient 1: Think of a name which is short
Shorter is better for domain name. How ? If you keep your domain name short then the visitors of the site can easily memories the name. It has a great benefit.
So think about short name for your domain.
Ingredient 2: It should be simple
Short & simple comes side by side, because if your domain is short and at the same time very simple to memorize then the name will spread more rapidly via word of mouth or other communication medium.
So KISS means “Keep It Short & Simple”. That will be your motto.
Ingredient 3: Meaningful
Yes it’s another important point, meaning of the name of your site. Take it very simply, it doesn’t necessarily have to be deep but it should carry some sought of resemblance of what you site is about.
Now you may ask, there are many sites, whose name doesn’t signify anything regarding what the site is about but they are highly successful. Then ?
Yes you are absolutely right. But when you are starting a site of self-help obviously you will think of name which has some sought of connection with personality, life, motivation etc. I am talking about this type of resemblance.
Ingredient 4: Don’t put any character between words
You will find there are some websites, whose name has two or three words separated by hyphen. Try not to think or give that type of name.
Ingredient 5: You can make it alphanumeric
In your domain name you can combine words with numbers like “trickz4u” or”target2achieve” etc. There you will find many successful sites with this type of combination.
The reason is if you can think of a good name with this combination then it will be cool and easy to remember also. See the above mentioned names which I have given as an example. If anyone heard it for once then he/ she will able to remember it.
Ingredient 6: Don’t use random alphabets, if it’s not shorter
As I have mentioned in my first point that short domain name is good for many reason. But it’s not everything.
It will be better if you can keep the domain name shorter, otherwise you can use some meaningful word(s) but don’t make it too long. Remember it’s a name not a sentence.
But don’t use random characters just for the sake of keeping it short. It’s not best practice. Don’t do it.
Ingredient 7: Segment your brand name from your name
Its important when you are thinking of a name for your site then it’s vital. At first give a clear thought on what you are going to create ?
A fresh brand or thinking that your name itself will work as your brand. Because based on that you have to think of a name of the site.
Let’s give you an example. Suppose I am going to start a site on Cooking, where different recipe will be discussed. Now if I want to establish my brand through this site then I will think of a name like “royskitchen” or something like that.
But if I want to start a site, where the main focus is on recipes and the person behind is secondary then I will think of a name like “masalamaza”, “masalamazik” or something like this.
So look at the two different type of name for two different context. I hope you understood the difference and why this segmentation is important for a good domain name.
These are some key points, which you should keep in mind when you are thinking of a good domain name.
