Just following trends for the sake of it, has become a trend itself !
Yes, it’s the truth. I am experiencing this around myself. Everybody is just creating the same or identical things in the mission of following trends.
Yes I am talking specifically about web designing vertical. Because for a long time of my career I am associated with this web design & development industry and I have worked very closely with various sections of this industry.
So, in these year I have experienced, seen & followed many such trends in web design.
Every time whenever any new trend arises, designers (many of the) try to jump on the bandwagon by giving their best to fit into it and start producing their work following that trend.
So in this way many times I got tired by watching those same stereotypical designs. You know what? These creates a fatigue, a visual fatigue.
My question is, why it should be? Designs are meant to be creative, refreshing & full of new ideas, right? But many times we don’t get it.
If you visit 10 different websites and in all those websites if you get the same stereotypical concept of design, will you be happy? You will definitely think that why everybody has to follow the same trend?
I am not talking about any Technology or from any Technological Context or the tools we all use frequently.
Because, in this ever-changing world of technology you have to adapt yourself with it (means latest technologies & tools), it’s quite normal. So, I am not talking about that.
I am talking about core design ideology, the web design trends like One Page design, long scroll etc. So whenever these trends rule, you will find that, all are trying to do the same thing. But again, why?
To whom, you have given your words that you have to follow the same thing what others are doing? As a designer you have the power to think & visualize differently. So, why are you swimming towards the stream, what everyone else is trying?
Yes, you may ask, what is so wrong in it? No, not at all. It’s not about right or wrong, it’s about your freedom, freedom of thought, expression & creativity.
So, I personally think that, following trends are not bad and you have to keep yourself updated with latest design trends but don’t let it overshadow your own thought.
Ultimately you are a designer & in creative field there is no such so-called pattern exists, which can bound your thought & creation, right?
So, we all know the good side of it (means following new trends or keeping knowledge of all latest trends) more or less. Today we will explore the not so good side of it.
Don’t worry I will not talk about any negative thing but I will try to explain some points from a different angle, which will help you to understand the main agenda of this topic. So, let’s find out.
It restricts your creativity
How? Because you may argue that, we are just following a trend, based on that we are applying our thoughts. So how can you say that, it’s restricting our creativity?
Please don’t take me otherwise, as I have already mentioned, in this post I will try to project some points from a different angle from my own point of view, which you may find helpful.
So, my main point is, when you are holding the same pattern or construct for a new design and on top of that you are applying your thoughts then how can it be totally independent?
Let me give you an instance, one page layout has become a well-known trend. Due to that, many companies, brands, start-ups & entrepreneurs are making their web presence by following trend of one page design.
All just want a one page site, thousands of site are following the same trends, don’t you feel it a bit monotonous?
Because whatever creativity you have to add, based on the main concept of one page layout. May be you have a great idea for the design of a new site, but due to client’s request you have to make it one page style anyhow.
So, I personally think from my overall experience of planning, conceptualizing, managing & developing many websites, when you ask a designer about following a specific trend, you are restricting him/ her in certain limitation.
And it’s equally true when a designer starts following trends meaninglessly suppressing his/ her actual capability. Because for this he/ she will not be able to freely convey the main idea.
It makes the entire design ecosystem a bit boring
As I was telling, when you are seeing that, 5 out of 10 websites, which you have visited, are following same trend then it’s obvious that you will feel a bit monotonous and it gets boring gradually.
And when the entire web design & development industry starts following a certain kind of trend somehow quite religiously, then to some extent creativity gets hurt & the entire ecosystem (web design & development) get affected from user experience wise.
It affects company’s brand value from both aspect
In recent days you will find that many of the start-up companies (not all) are creating a specific type of website, which you can easily identify, because they have some very common pattern.
So in this way ultimately they are diluting their brand. Because in recent time, website is the primary identity for a business.
Website is any business’s front end or public face, so if the face is not unique then how your clients will be able to differentiate it from others. If it’s the scenario, then how will you stand among your competitors? Right?
So this was one aspect, the other aspect covers the designer’s end.
When you are a web designer and making designs for others, means running your own consulting business, then if you can’t give yourself a bit pause from following trends tirelessly, ultimately your creative output will get hampered, as well as your brands image.
If the client asks yourself strictly to follow a particular trend that’s a different matter. But don’t ever make yourself this kind of stereotypical. So let the creative juices flow & create something out of the box.
So, I think you all have gotten my points and main objective behind this article. If you have any question or opinion, please share via comment.
